Introducing Kale Sprouts: a dark, delicately curled variety of kale that boasts a mild brassica/mustard flavour, perfect for both baby leaf harvesting and bunching. To cultivate these nutrient-packed greens to perfection, follow these guidelines:

🌱 Seedling Height: Aim for seedlings to reach a height of 15cm-20cm, including the root system.

📏 Spacing: When planting, ensure rows are spaced 35cm-45cm apart, with individual plants also spaced 35cm-45cm apart for optimal growth.

🥗 Harvest Time: Expect a harvest window of 7-9 weeks, although this timeframe may vary depending on your specific location and prevailing weather conditions.

🌡️ Growing Conditions: Kale Sprouts thrive in environments offering full to partial sun exposure. Optimal soil conditions include well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Consistent watering is key to encouraging tender, sweeter leaves. These greens prefer slightly acidic soil and benefit from a shallow layer of mulch to maintain cool soil temperatures.

  • Cross between Curly Kale and Brussels Sprouts seed variety
  • Produces small sized sprouts with a frilled appearance
  • Very uniform, vigorous plant frame and easy to deleaf
  • High number of sprouts per bush

Kale and Kale Sprouts:

  1. Variety: Kale and Kale Sprouts belong to the same species, Brassica oleracea, but they are different varieties. Kale typically refers to the larger, broader-leaved varieties of Brassica oleracea, while Kale Sprouts are a specific cultivar known for its fine, curled leaves.

  2. Leaf Size and Texture: Kale typically has larger, broader leaves, while Kale Sprouts have smaller, more delicate leaves that are finely curled.

  3. Flavour: Both Kale and Kale Sprouts have a similar mild brassica/mustard flavour, but Kale Sprouts are often noted for their tenderness and sweetness, especially when harvested at a younger age.

  4. Harvesting: Kale is typically harvested by picking individual leaves or cutting entire stalks. Kale Sprouts, on the other hand, are often harvested as baby leaves, making them suitable for both baby leaf harvesting and bunching.

  5. Growing Conditions: While both Kale and Kale Sprouts prefer similar growing conditions, such as full to partial sun and well-drained soil rich in organic matter, Kale Sprouts may require slightly different spacing and care due to their smaller size and more delicate nature.

In summary, while Kale and Kale Sprouts share similarities in terms of their nutritional benefits and growing requirements, they differ in leaf size, texture, harvesting methods, and flavour profile, with Kale Sprouts offering a more delicate and tender option suitable for baby leaf harvesting.

Did you know? Kale is a nutritional powerhouse, boasting more than twice the Vitamin C content of spinach, along with higher levels of Calcium and Vitamin K. Additionally, it's rich in fiber, protein, and folate, while also providing nutrients that support eye health. With Kale Sprouts, you're cultivating a vibrant and nutritious addition to your garden and your diet.
